In a world where we now so often feel overwhelmed by bad news, we focus on the good in life, even during tough times. Healing Time It’s 4:45 pm, Monday, February 23, in Maui, Hawaii, and my husband, Scott, and I just got back from a snorkeling trip where we swam with a sea turtle and saw a mama and baby whale playing in the bay. On the way back to the harbor, about 30 silver flying fish flew by, and a rainbow appeared. Life felt pretty perfect on the island. I’m out of my wet bathing suit now and into dry shorts and a t-shirt, the damp towels are drying on the balcony chairs, and I’m still glowing from the warm sun on my

Hope for the Coming Year  Happy New Year! We are starting a new year and reflecting on the past one.  I’ve just celebrated my 75th birthday, which brings many memories to reflect on. As a Baby Boomer, I was raised during the shadow of polio, just as Sputnik was preparing to launch the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. Polio was once one of the most feared diseases in the United States. Thanks to the polio vaccine, the poliovirus was eradicated here in 1979. I lived through the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, which claimed 32 million lives worldwide and over 700,000 here in the U.S. Then came COVID-19, which resulted in the deaths of 1.2 million Americans.  I’ve always wanted to write about the AIDS pandemic, but it felt too

Success! Fundraising Walk: Step Out and Care

The afternoon of Sunday September 14th started with clouds but then the sun burst forth for the 70+ participants of the Step Out & Care fundraising walk around Lake Estes. The elk also made an appearance! This community event was fun and raised over $8,100 (after expenses) to support the creation of the Estes Dementia Day Center. Many, many thanks to our walkers, volunteers, sponsors, donors and folks who stopped by to learn more. Thank you to Estes Park News, Trail Gazette, and the Estes Valley Voice for helping us advertise! Thank you to Trail Ridge Printing for printing our T-shirts. Community members still have time this fall to help us reach the $500,000 goal needed to create a sustainable day center for those with

I became the Board President of the Estes Dementia Day Center for personal and professional reasons. I am retired from a long career in non-profits and didn’t expect to be involved in creating another one. Yet here I am. I want to introduce you to two women who taught me about dementia and inspired me to become involved in this vital project.  I’ve been married twice and feel fortunate to have had my two mothers-in-law, Jean and Grace, in my life. They were very different women: one an Easterner who loved being a housewife to an Air Force officer, and the other a Colorado native who was a working woman long before it was socially acceptable for women to work. Both were petite, joyful women,
